Lineage of al-Habib Umar bin Abdul Rahman al-Attas

His name was Al-Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman bin Agil bin Salim bin Ubaidullah bin Abdurrahman bin Abdullah bin Syeikh al Ghauts Abdurrahman as-Seggaf bin Muhammad Maulah Dawilah bin Ali bin Alawi al Ghoyur bin Sayyidina al Faqih al Muqaddam Muhammad bin Ali binl Imam Muhammad Shahib Mirbath bin Ali bin Alwi bin Muhammad bin Alwi bin Ubaidullah bin Imam al Muhajir Ahmad bin Isa bin Muhammad an Naqib binl Imam Ali al Uraidhi bin Jaafar as Shadiq binl Imam Muhammad al Baqir binl Imam Ali Zainal Abidin binl Imam Hussein as Sibith binl Imam Ali bin Abi Thalib, husband of Batul Fatimah az-Zahra binti Rasullullah S.A.W.

With regards to the Declaration of the name “Al-Attas”,
According to Al-Habib Ali bin Hassan Al-Attas: “In actually fact, what was said by Syeikh al-Faqih Abdullah bin Umar Ba’Ubad which is, “Al-Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman bin Aqil was given the title al-Attas, which is the act of sneezing in Arabic, as he sneezed whilst in his mother’s womb”, is correct, following traditions that have been told, but the actual truth and fact is that the actual person to have sneezed whilst in the mother’s womb was Al-Habib Aqil who was Habib Umar’s Grandfather. Habib Umar was made famous with this title and the cause of the declaration of the title, to the point that his sons, and the sons of Al-Habib Aqil and Abdullah, his relatives, knew him to have been the one the title and the cause of the declaration were related to. His Grandfather’s descendents, i.e. Al-Habib Agil, were known with the family name Agil Bin Salim or otherwise known as Al Ba Aqil.

Al-Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman Al-Attas was born in the town of Lisik near ‘Inat in Hadramaut. He was educated by Shaykh al-Husayn bin al-Shaykh Abu Bakr bin Salim and went on to teach and spread Islam in Hadramaut.

Sayyiduna’l Imam Al-Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman Al-Attas (passed away 1072 A.H) is popularly known as Qutb al-Anfaas (the pillar who breathed only for the sake of Allah). He was the Shaykh of Sayyiduna’l Imam al-Habib Abdullah bin Alawi al-Haddad (1044-1132 A.H) who is popularly known as Qutb u’l Irshad (the pillar of religious guidance).

Tentang Asal-Usul gelaran name keluarga “Al-Attas”,
Kata al- Habib Ali bin Hassan al-Attas: “Sebenarnya apa yang diucapkan oleh Syeikh al-Faqih Abdullah bin Umar Ba’ubad yaitu bahawa “Beliau dinamakan al-Attas yang bermaksud bersin, kerana beliau pernah bersin ketika masih berada di dalam perut ibunya”, adalah benar, hanya menurut khabar yang paling benar dikatakan bahawa pertama kali bersin ketika masih berada di perut ibunya adalah Habib Aqil yang terkenal hanya Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman al-Attas, sehingga berita itu hanya dikenal pada diri beliau dan anak beliau dan anak cucu Aqil dan Abdullah, saudara beliau. Sedangkan anak cucu Sayyidina Aqil bin Salim yang lain dikenal dengan nama keluarga Aqil bin Salim (ataupun Al Ba Aqil)”.

Waliyullah Al-Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman Al-Attas pulang ke rahmatullah pada tahun 1072 Hijriyyah dan dikenali sebagai Al-Qutb Aal-Anfaas. Dia adalah Syeikh/Ustadh Sayyiduna’l Imam al-Habib Abdallah ibn ‘Alawi Alhaddad, yang digelar al-Qutb ul Irshad.

Semoga Allah SWT memasukkan beliau-beliau ke dalam surga dan menghimpunkannya bersama-sama para Nabi, para syuhada, para Auliya dan para Sholihin.
