Habib Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani bin Salim bin Alawi Kharid was a Ba Alawi scholar born in Tarim in 1358 AH, corresponding to 1939. Muwasala explicitly identifies the Kharid family as descendants of al-Faqih al-Muqaddam through Shaykh Abdullah bin Alawi Ba Alawi.
He memorised the Quran by the age of twelve at Qubbah Abu Murayyam, Tarim’s historic Quran school, and continued his studies at the Ribat of Tarim. Among the scholars from whom he learned were Habib Muhammad bin Salim bin Hafiz and Habib Alawi bin Shihab.
In 1376 AH, corresponding to 1956, he moved to the Hijaz. There he worked in editing and journalism while continuing his religious studies. His teachers included Sayyid Alawi bin Abbas al-Maliki, Sayyid Muhammad Amin Kutbi and Shaykh Yasin al-Fadani. Muwasala describes Habib Attas al-Habashi and Habib Abd al-Qadir al-Saqqaf as especially important teachers in his formation. At Habib Abd al-Qadir al-Saqqaf’s direction, he established a regular circle of learning in his own home.
Habib Abd al-Qadir wrote several works and also helped preserve earlier family scholarship. He assisted in reprinting Imam Muhammad bin Ali Kharid’s al-Ghurar, a collection of Ba Alawi biographies, and al-Wasail al-Shafiah, and wrote forewords for them. He died in Jeddah on 1 Rabi al-Thani 1447 AH, corresponding to 23 September 2025.
