Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Hasan Barum was a Ba Alawi scholar of Tarim who became known for hadith, Quranic commentary and public service. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that he memorised the Quran by the age of seven, studied the canonical readings with trusted teachers and then pursued the religious sciences, jurisprudence and tasawwuf.
Among his teachers was Abd al-Rahman bin Shihab al-Din al-Saqqaf, the judge of Tarim. He also studied with Muhammad bin Ismail Bafadl and other scholars, travelled through Yemen and later to the Hijaz, performed Hajj and spent several years in the Two Holy Sanctuaries. After returning to Tarim he taught widely, especially in hadith and Quranic commentary.
The source also records Abdullah’s involvement with the endowments of Al Abdullah Ba Alawi. During his period overseeing them he used their resources to support the poor and others in need and arranged food each night for poor people, travellers and visitors. A later historical work, Idam al-Qut fi Dhikr Buldan Hadramawt, independently preserves this episode and records that Zayn al-Abidin later helped arrange for Abdullah to serve as imam of the congregational mosque with support for his household.
Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that Abdullah died in 1039 AH after passing the age of seventy and was buried in Zanbal Cemetery. Idam al-Qut independently identifies the same Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Hasan Barum, explicitly cites his Al-Mashra biography and gives the same death year.
