Abdullah bin Umar bin Muhammad bin Ahmad Ba Shayban was born in Qism in 914 AH. Al-Mashra al-Rawi describes him as a scholar who devoted himself to the religious sciences from an early age, memorised the Qur’an and studied foundational texts in recitation, law, Arabic and related disciplines.
His principal early teacher was his father, Umar bin Muhammad Ba Shayban. Abdullah presented his memorised texts to him, attended his lessons and trained with him in jurisprudence, spiritual discipline and other religious sciences. The biography also names Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sahl Baqashir among the scholars from whom he studied hadith and jurisprudence.
Abdullah travelled to Tarim and other places in pursuit of knowledge. The account says that scholars authorised him to teach and benefit others, after which he taught, recited and helped spread learning. It also remembers his close attention to Ihya Ulum al-Din and describes him as a learned, pious and disciplined figure.
The primary biography does not state a death year for Abdullah. The 1007 AH death immediately following his section belongs to a different man, Abdullah bin Umar bin Muhammad bin Hamdun, and is not assigned to him.
Lineage and source note
The primary source is Al-Mashra al-Rawi fi Manaqib al-Sada al-Kiram Al Abi Alawi, volume 2. Its Arabic heading traces Abdullah through Umar, Muhammad, Ahmad and Abu Bakr Ba Shayban, then Muhammad Asad Allah, Hasan, Ali and al-Faqih al-Muqaddam. The section records his birth in Qism in 914 AH, his studies with his father and other scholars, his travels, teaching and devotional life. It ends without an own death year.
An independent exact-person genealogical witness appears in Shams al-Zahirah fi Nasab Ahl al-Bayt min Bani Alawi, first edition, 1404 AH / 1984 CE, printed page 446. The main text identifies Umar bin Muhammad and restores the parenthetical chain through Ahmad and Abu Bakr Ba Shayban. Footnote (3) states that Umar had a son, Abdullah bin Umar, who was born in Qism in 914 AH and was a scholar from whom people benefited.
The same Shams al-Zahirah page does not supply a death year for Abdullah. No death year is inferred or borrowed from the following biography.
Scholarly connections
The primary biography explicitly presents Umar bin Muhammad Ba Shayban as Abdullah’s father and principal early teacher, and names Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sahl Baqashir among his teachers. These names are retained as source-recorded scholarly connections; no live profile is linked unless the target identity can be resolved exactly.
