How should I read this archive record?

Older entries may combine published scholarship, family or community tradition, inherited terminology and historical interpretation. Uncited claims are a starting point for further source review rather than certification.

Alawi bin Muhammad al-Muallim bin Ali Jahdab Ba Alawi was a scholar of Tarim. Al-Mashra al-Rawi traces his lineage through Ali Jahdab, Abd al-Rahman and Muhammad to Shaykh Abdullah Ba Alawi. The same exact Alawi, son of Muhammad al-Muallim in the Ali Jahdab branch, is independently preserved in Shams al-Zahirah.

He was born in Tarim, memorised the Qur’an and recited it with his father. Al-Mashra al-Rawi places his father at the centre of his early education and says that Alawi remained closely attached to him while pursuing religious learning. It remembers him for regular fasting, congregational prayer, remembrance of Allah, hospitality and respect for scholars and spiritual teachers.

Al-Mashra al-Rawi says that many people benefited from Alawi’s company and names Ahmad Hamdun, Abdullah, Ali and Sulayman among his sons. Shams al-Zahirah preserves a different descendant listing in the same branch, including a Muhammad Hamdun line. The two transmitted lists are reported separately here and are not silently harmonised.

Alawi died in 914 AH. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records his burial in Zanbal Cemetery in Tarim. The 914 AH death year is independently preserved in the identified first edition of Shams al-Zahirah.

Lineage and source note

The primary biographical source is Al-Mashra al-Rawi fi Manaqib al-Sada al-Kiram Al Abi Alawi, volume 2, in the biography of Alawi bin Muhammad al-Muallim bin Ali Jahdab. It records his Tarim upbringing, Qur’an study with his father, devotional life, named sons, death in 914 AH and burial at Zanbal.

An independent exact-person witness appears in Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Husayn al-Mashhur, Shams al-Zahirah fi Nasab Ahl al-Bayt min Bani Alawi, edited by Muhammad Diya Shihab, first edition, Alam al-Ma’rifah, Jeddah, 1404 AH / 1984 CE, printed pages 349 and 350. Printed page 349 places Alawi as the son of Muhammad al-Muallim in the Ali Jahdab line and records that he was born in Tarim and died there in 914 AH. Printed page 350 continues his descendants.

The descendant listing in Shams al-Zahirah differs in part from the one transmitted in Al-Mashra al-Rawi. No attempt is made to force those two transmissions into a single reconstructed list.

Scholarly connection

Al-Mashra al-Rawi explicitly presents Alawi’s father, Muhammad al-Muallim, as his principal early teacher. No teacher-student link is inferred beyond that source wording because an exact live canonical BaAlawi profile for Muhammad al-Muallim has not been resolved.
