Ahmad bin Abi Bakr bin Ahmad al-Shilli was a seventeenth-century Ba Alawi scholar from Tarim. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that he was born in Tarim in 1019 AH. He memorised the Quran and several foundational texts, then pursued jurisprudence, hadith, Arabic and related disciplines with his father and a broad circle of teachers in Hadramawt. Among those named in the source are Muhammad al-Hadi bin Abd al-Rahman bin Shihab al-Din, the judge Ahmad bin Husayn, Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah Baharun, Zayn al-Abidin al-Aydarus and Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf bin Muhammad al-Aydarus.
The source describes scholarly travel as an important part of his formation. He travelled to India, where he continued studying Arabic, literary and Sufi disciplines and associated with scholars there, before returning to Tarim. He later travelled to the Two Holy Sanctuaries, performed the pilgrimage and studied with scholars including Muhammad bin Alawi, Abd al-Aziz al-Zamzami and Muhammad Ali Allan. After returning to Tarim he continued teaching and study. Later biographical literature independently identifies him as Ahmad bin Abi Bakr bin Ahmad al-Shilli, gives the same Tarim birth year of 1019 AH, and records his death in Tarim in 1057 AH.
