Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Hadi bin Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf was a Ba Alawi scholar born in Tarim who became known for the religious sciences, Arabic and teaching in Mecca. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that he memorised the Quran and al-Irshad, then studied tafsir, hadith, jurisprudence, Arabic and tasawwuf with members of his family and other leading scholars.
Among his documented teachers were his uncle Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin Shihab al-Din and Abdullah bin Shaykh bin Abdullah al-Aydarus. He also studied with Zayn al-Abidin al-Aydarus, Abd al-Rahman bin Aqil and other scholars before travelling to the Hijaz.
In the Holy Cities he studied with scholars including Ahmad bin Allan and Umar bin Abd al-Rahim al-Basri. He received licences to teach and issue legal opinions, and Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that he taught at the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. The biography gives particular attention to his repeated study and teaching of Ihya Ulum al-Din and to his public lessons in Quranic commentary.
The traditional source also preserves accounts of karamat attributed to Ahmad, including prayers that were believed to have been answered for people who sought his supplication. These reports are retained as part of the received devotional biography and are presented as attributed tradition rather than independently verified historical events.
Ahmad died in 1045 AH and was buried at al-Ma’la in Mecca near the graves of members of the Ba Alawi family. Independent historical scholarship preserves the same identity, Tarim origin, principal teachers, Hijaz study, Meccan teaching role and death year.
