يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ وَمَعَهُ سَيْفُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذُو الْفِقَارِ ، قَالَ : فَنَضْبِطُهُ فَيُفْلِتُ فَيَحْمِلُ عَلَيْهِمْ , قَالَ : ثُمَّ يَجِيءُ , قَالَ : ثُمَّ يَحْمِلُ عَلَيْهِمْ , قَالَ : فَجَاءَ بِسَيْفِهِ قَدْ تَثَنَّى , فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ هَذَا يَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكُمْ " .
