Meaning

English

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported in explanation of Allah's statement: {And said: Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwā‘ or Yaghūth and Ya‘ūq and Nasr} [Sūrat Nūh: 23]. These are names of some pious men of the people of Nūh. When they died, Satan inspired their people to prepare and place idols at the places where they used to sit and to call those idols after their names.

The people did so, but the idols were not worshiped till those people (who built them) had died and the original purpose for the existence (of those idols) had been forgotten
