Ahmad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Ali bin Abi Bakr al-Saqqaf, known as Shihab al-Din, was a scholar of Tarim whose biography in Al-Mashra al-Rawi places him among the leading teachers of his generation. He was born in Tarim in 887 AH, memorised the Qur’an and pursued the religious sciences from an early age.
He received spiritual instruction from his father Abd al-Rahman and studied fiqh with Qadi Ahmad Sharif. His teachers in hadith and related sciences included Muhammad bin Ali Kharid, Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman al-Faqih and Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman Bafadl. He also travelled for study in Yemen and the Two Holy Sanctuaries and took knowledge from Abu al-Hasan al-Bakri and Ibn Hajar al-Makki.
After returning to Tarim, Ahmad taught students in the outward and inward religious sciences. Al-Mashra al-Rawi names Shaykh bin Abdullah bin Shaykh bin Abdullah al-Aydarus, Qadi Muhammad bin Husayn bin Shaykh Ali, Abu Bakr bin Abdullah and Yahya al-Khatib among those who studied with him. The biography also records a reciprocal scholarly exchange with the hadith scholar Muhammad bin Ali Kharid, each taking knowledge from the other.
The same biography preserves traditional accounts of karamat associated with Ahmad. Among them, it relates that when a man asked him to pray for the ability to memorise the Qur’an, the man’s request was fulfilled quickly. It also records his prediction to his student Shaykh bin Abdullah al-Aydarus that people in a distant region would benefit from him, which the narrative connects with the student’s later journey to Ahmadabad in India. These accounts belong to his received devotional biography and are preserved here as transmitted tradition.
Ahmad died in 946 AH and was buried in Zanbal Cemetery in Tarim.
Lineage and source note
Primary source: Al-Mashra al-Rawi fi Manaqib al-Sada al-Kiram Al Abi Alawi, volume 2, biography of Shihab al-Din Ahmad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Ali bin Abi Bakr al-Saqqaf. It supplies his 887 AH birth, teachers, travels, students, transmitted karamat, death in 946 AH and burial at Zanbal.
