Hasan bin Ali bin Muhammad al-Faqih al-Muqaddam, known as Hasan al-Turabi, was an early Ba Alawi scholar and devotional figure of Tarim. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that he was born in Tarim, memorised the Quran and devoted himself to religious learning and worship.

He studied closely with Abdullah Ba Alawi and became known for combining jurisprudence and tasawwuf. The biography remembers him for rigorous worship, strong scrupulousness and an austere way of life. It explains that he was called al-Turabi because of the severity of his simplicity and rough outward appearance.

Hasan was described as avoiding rulers and their associates, giving away whatever came to him rather than keeping provisions for the following day, and refusing doubtful property whenever he was uncertain of its permissibility. The source says that only a relatively small circle benefited directly from him because of his preference for seclusion.

Among those who benefited from him was his son Muhammad Asad Allah, who became an important ancestor in several later Ba Alawi family lines.

Hasan died in 721 AH.

Lineage and source note

Primary source: Al-Mashra al-Rawi fi Manaqib al-Sada al-Kiram Al Abi Alawi, volume 2, biography of Hasan bin Ali, grandson of al-Faqih al-Muqaddam Muhammad bin Ali. It records his Tarim origin, Quran study, relationship with Abdullah Ba Alawi, scholarly and devotional life, the al-Turabi sobriquet, his son Muhammad Asad Allah and death in 721 AH.

Later genealogical material concerning the Jamal al-Layl, al-Habashi and related Ba Alawi branches independently preserves Hasan al-Turabi as Hasan bin Ali bin Muhammad al-Faqih al-Muqaddam and places Muhammad Asad Allah in the next generation. Separate modern historical discussion likewise records Hasan al-Turabi’s death in 721 AH, matching the primary biography.

Scholarly connections

Al-Mashra al-Rawi explicitly identifies Abdullah Ba Alawi as Hasan’s teacher. No structured live link is added because the exact historical Abdullah Ba Alawi does not currently resolve to a canonical live BaAlawi biography.
