Abdullah bin Muhammad Ba Alawi was a scholar of the Ba Alawi tradition whose life connected Qism, Tarim, Makkah and Madinah. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that he was born in Qism in 1015 AH, memorised the Qur’an and studied with scholars of his own town before travelling to Tarim for further learning.
The biography names Abd al-Rahman al-Muallim among his early teachers and also records study with scholars from the Baqshir and Bashuayb families. In Tarim he took knowledge from senior figures including the father of the biographer Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Shilli, Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf al-Aydarus and Husayn bin Abd al-Rahman al-Habshi.
He later travelled to the Two Holy Sanctuaries. After performing the rites of Hajj and continuing his studies in Makkah, he settled in Madinah. Al-Shilli records that he himself took knowledge from Abdullah in Madinah and also benefited from his company in Makkah, giving the biography a direct first-person link between teacher and student.
The account remembers Abdullah for night prayer, careful use of his time, regular reading of works of spiritual refinement and particular attachment to Imam al-Ghazali’s Ihya Ulum al-Din. It also preserves an episode in which the notables of Madinah selected him for a delicate task connected with a fallen lamp in the Prophet’s chamber, presenting the episode as evidence of the esteem in which he was held.
Al-Mashra al-Rawi gives his death as the beginning of Sha’ban 1085 AH in Madinah. It records that he was buried in al-Baqi and that his grave was known and visited.
Lineage and source note
Primary source: Al-Mashra al-Rawi fi Manaqib al-Sada al-Kiram Al Abi Alawi, volume 2, biography of Abdullah bin Muhammad Ba Alawi. The Arabic heading traces Abdullah through Muhammad, Abdullah, Muhammad, Alawi and Ahmad in the Ba Alawi line. The primary biography supplies the 1015 AH birth in Qism, his named teachers, travel to Tarim and the Hijaz, residence in Madinah, al-Shilli’s first-person testimony of studying with him, and the 1085 AH death in Madinah.
The later genealogical work Shams al-Zahirah independently preserves Abdullah’s full lineage through Muhammad, Abdullah, Muhammad, Alawi and Ahmad Qism. It also places his birth in Qism, his studies in Tarim and the Haramain, and his death in Madinah. The exact 1015 AH and 1085 AH dates remain attributed here to Al-Mashra al-Rawi rather than being claimed as independently established by Shams al-Zahirah.
