Umar bin Muhammad bin Alawi bin Muhammad al-Muallim Ba Alawi was a scholar of Tarim whose father was known as Hamdun. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that he was born and raised in Tarim and devoted himself to religious learning and disciplined worship.
Among his teachers were his uncle Ahmad bin Alawi and Ahmad bin Husayn bin Abdullah al-Aydarus. The biography explicitly says that Umar took knowledge from them and others of their generation. It remembers him for strong retention, careful use of his time, fasting, night prayer and generosity.
Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that Umar died in Rajab 997 AH and was buried in Zanbal Cemetery.

The later genealogical work Shams al-Zahirah independently preserves the exact Umar bin Muhammad bin Alawi bin Muhammad al-Muallim identity in the Ali Jahdab branch and records that he was born and died in Tarim. Its note points to Al-Mashra al-Rawi for his death year, so 997 AH remains attributed to the primary biography rather than treated as independently dated.
