Ahmad bin Abi Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf was a scholar of Tarim remembered in Al-Mashra al-Rawi for Quranic learning, hadith, fiqh, theology, tasawwuf and instruction. He was born in Tarim, memorised the Quran under Muhammad bin Umar Alawi and grew up in the care of his father Abu Bakr al-Sakran, from whom he also took knowledge.
His teachers included his grandfather Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf, his uncle Umar al-Mihdar, Muhammad bin Hasan Jamal al-Layl, Said Ba Ubayd and scholars of the Baqshir, Bahrami and al-Khatib families. He also studied with his brother Abdullah al-Aydarus and shared a number of his teachers.
The biography remembers Ahmad as a teacher in hadith, fiqh and the principles of religion. His nephew Abu Bakr bin Abdullah al-Aydarus names Ahmad as his shaykh and records that Ahmad invested him with the khirqa on several occasions, including in 867 AH in Tarim. The source also names Husayn bin Abdullah al-Aydarus among Ahmad’s students, along with Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman Balhaj and Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman Balfqih.
The later devotional work Al-Urf al-Atir fi Marifat al-Khawatir wa Ghayriha min al-Jawahir by Abd al-Rahman bin Mustafa al-Aydarus separately names Ahmad bin Abi Bakr al-Sakran as the brother of al-Aydarus. It remembers a daily litany of the declaration of faith attributed to him. That author’s notice supports the exact kinship identity; the editor’s footnote expands the lineage and repeats the 869 AH death from Al-Mashra al-Rawi, so it is not treated as an independent death-date witness.
Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that Ahmad died in the village of al-Lisk in 869 AH. His body was taken to Tarim and he was buried in Zanbal Cemetery.
