Surah 53 · 62 ayat

An-Najm

The Star

النجم

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

53:1

وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ

MeaningBy the Star when it setteth,

53:2

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ

MeaningYour comrade erreth not, nor is deceived;

53:3

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ

MeaningNor doth he speak of (his own) desire.

53:4

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ

MeaningIt is naught save an inspiration that is inspired,

53:5

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ

MeaningWhich one of mighty powers hath taught him,

53:6

ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ

MeaningOne vigorous; and he grew clear to view

53:7

وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

MeaningWhen he was on the uppermost horizon.

53:8

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ

MeaningThen he drew nigh and came down

53:9

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ

MeaningTill he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer,

53:10

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ

MeaningAnd He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed.

53:11

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ

MeaningThe heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw.

53:12

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ

MeaningWill ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth?

53:13

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ

MeaningAnd verily he saw him yet another time

53:14

عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ

MeaningBy the lote-tree of the utmost boundary,

53:15

عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ

MeaningNigh unto which is the Garden of Abode.

53:16

إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ

MeaningWhen that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree,

53:17

مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ

MeaningThe eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold.

53:18

لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ

MeaningVerily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord.

53:19

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ

MeaningHave ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza

53:20

وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ

MeaningAnd Manat, the third, the other?

53:21

أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ

MeaningAre yours the males and His the females?

53:22

تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ

MeaningThat indeed were an unfair division!

53:23

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

MeaningThey are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them.

53:24

أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ

MeaningOr shall man have what he coveteth?

53:25

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ

MeaningBut unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former.

53:26

وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ

MeaningAnd how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession availeth naught save after Allah giveth leave to whom He chooseth and accepteth.

53:27

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ

MeaningLo! it is those who disbelieve in the Hereafter who name the angels with the names of females.

53:28

وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا

MeaningAnd they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and lo! a guess can never take the place of the truth.

53:29

فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا

MeaningThen withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who fleeth from Our remembrance and desireth but the life of the world.

53:30

ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ

MeaningSuch is their sum of knowledge. Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth, and He is Best Aware of him whom goeth right.

53:31

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى

MeaningAnd unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, that He may reward those who do evil with that which they have done, and reward those who do good with goodness.

53:32

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ

MeaningThose who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences – (for them) lo! thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is Best Aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefor ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is Best Aware of him who wardeth off (evil).

53:33

أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ

MeaningDidst thou (O Muhammad) observe him who turned away,

53:34

وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ

MeaningAnd gave a little, then was grudging?

53:35

أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ

MeaningHath he knowledge of the Unseen so that he seeth?

53:36

أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ

MeaningOr hath he not had news of what is in the books of Moses

53:37

وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ

MeaningAnd Abraham who paid his debt:

53:38

أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ

MeaningThat no laden one shall bear another's load,

53:39

وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ

MeaningAnd that man hath only that for which he maketh effort,

53:40

وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ

MeaningAnd that his effort will be seen.

53:41

ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ

MeaningAnd afterward he will be repaid for it with fullest payment;

53:42

وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ

MeaningAnd that thy Lord, He is the goal;

53:43

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ

MeaningAnd that He it is who maketh laugh, and maketh weep,

53:44

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا

MeaningAnd that He it is Who giveth death and giveth life;

53:45

وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ

MeaningAnd that He createth the two spouses, the male and the female,

53:46

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ

MeaningFrom a drop (of seed) when it is poured forth;

53:47

وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ

MeaningAnd that He hath ordained the second bringing forth;

53:48

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ

MeaningAnd that He it is Who enricheth and contenteth;

53:49

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ

MeaningAnd that He it is Who is the Lord of Sirius;

53:50

وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ

MeaningAnd that He destroyed the former (tribe of) A'ad,

53:51

وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ

MeaningAnd (the tribe of) Thamud He spared not;

53:52

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ

MeaningAnd the folk of Noah aforetime, Lo! they were more unjust and more rebellious;

53:53

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ

MeaningAnd Al-Mu'tafikah He destroyed

53:54

فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ

MeaningSo that there covered them that which did cover.

53:55

فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ

MeaningConcerning which then, of the bounties of thy Lord, canst thou dispute?

53:56

هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ

MeaningThis is a warner of the warners of old.

53:57

أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ

MeaningThe threatened Hour is nigh.

53:58

لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

MeaningNone beside Allah can disclose it.

53:59

أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ

MeaningMarvel ye then at this statement,

53:60

وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ

MeaningAnd laugh and not weep,

53:61

وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ

MeaningWhile ye amuse yourselves?

53:62

فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩

MeaningRather prostrate yourselves before Allah and serve Him.
