Surah 56 · 96 ayat

Al-Waaqia

The Inevitable

الواقعة

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

56:1

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ

MeaningWhen the event befalleth –

56:2

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

MeaningThere is no denying that it will befall –

56:3

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ

MeaningAbasing (some), exalting (others);

56:4

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا

MeaningWhen the earth is shaken with a shock

56:5

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا

MeaningAnd the hills are ground to powder

56:6

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا

MeaningSo that they become a scattered dust,

56:7

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً

MeaningAnd ye will be three kinds:

56:8

فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

Meaning(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

56:9

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

MeaningAnd (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?

56:10

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ

MeaningAnd the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:

56:11

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ

MeaningThose are they who will be brought nigh

56:12

فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

MeaningIn gardens of delight;

56:13

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

MeaningA multitude of those of old

56:14

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

MeaningAnd a few of those of later time.

56:15

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ

MeaningOn lined couches,

56:16

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ

MeaningReclining therein face to face.

56:17

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ

MeaningThere wait on them immortal youths

56:18

بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ

MeaningWith bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring

56:19

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ

MeaningWherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,

56:20

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ

MeaningAnd fruit that they prefer

56:21

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ

MeaningAnd flesh of fowls that they desire.

56:22

وَحُورٌ عِينٌ

MeaningAnd (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,

56:23

كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ

MeaningLike unto hidden pearls,

56:24

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

MeaningReward for what they used to do.

56:25

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا

MeaningThere hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination

56:26

إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا

Meaning(Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace.

56:27

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ

MeaningAnd those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

56:28

فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ

MeaningAmong thornless lote-trees

56:29

وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ

MeaningAnd clustered plantains,

56:30

وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ

MeaningAnd spreading shade,

56:31

وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ

MeaningAnd water gushing,

56:32

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ

MeaningAnd fruit in plenty

56:33

لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ

MeaningNeither out of reach nor yet forbidden,

56:34

وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ

MeaningAnd raised couches;

56:35

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً

MeaningLo! We have created them a (new) creation

56:36

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا

MeaningAnd made them virgins,

56:37

عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا

MeaningLovers, friends,

56:38

لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

MeaningFor those on the right hand;

56:39

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

MeaningA multitude of those of old

56:40

وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

MeaningAnd a multitude of those of later time.

56:41

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ

MeaningAnd those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand?

56:42

فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ

MeaningIn scorching wind and scalding water

56:43

وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ

MeaningAnd shadow of black smoke,

56:44

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ

MeaningNeither cool nor refreshing.

56:45

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ

MeaningLo! heretofore they were effete with luxury

56:46

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

MeaningAnd used to persist in the awful sin.

56:47

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

MeaningAnd they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,

56:48

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

MeaningAnd also our forefathers?

56:49

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

MeaningSay (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time

56:50

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

MeaningWill all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.

56:51

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ

MeaningThen lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,

56:52

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ

MeaningYe verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum

56:53

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ

MeaningAnd will fill your bellies therewith;

56:54

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ

MeaningAnd thereon ye will drink of boiling water,

56:55

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ

MeaningDrinking even as the camel drinketh.

56:56

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

MeaningThis will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.

56:57

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

MeaningWe created you. Will ye then admit the truth?

56:58

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ

MeaningHave ye seen that which ye emit?

56:59

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ

MeaningDo ye create it or are We the Creator?

56:60

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

MeaningWe mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,

56:61

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

MeaningThat We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.

56:62

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

MeaningAnd verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?

56:63

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ

MeaningHave ye seen that which ye cultivate?

56:64

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ

MeaningIs it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?

56:65

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ

MeaningIf We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim:

56:66

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ

MeaningLo! we are laden with debt!

56:67

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

MeaningNay, but we are deprived!

56:68

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ

MeaningHave ye observed the water which ye drink?

56:69

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ

MeaningIs it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?

56:70

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ

MeaningIf We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks?

56:71

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ

MeaningHave ye observed the fire which ye strike out;

56:72

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ

MeaningWas it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower?

56:73

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ

MeaningWe, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness.

56:74

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

MeaningTherefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.

56:75

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ

MeaningNay, I swear by the places of the stars –

56:76

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ

MeaningAnd lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew –

56:77

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ

MeaningThat (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an

56:78

فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ

MeaningIn a Book kept hidden

56:79

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ

MeaningWhich none toucheth save the purified,

56:80

تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

MeaningA revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

56:81

أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ

MeaningIs it this Statement that ye scorn,

56:82

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ

MeaningAnd make denial thereof your livelihood?

56:83

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ

MeaningWhy, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)

56:84

وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ

MeaningAnd ye are at that moment looking

56:85

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ

MeaningAnd We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not-

56:86

فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ

MeaningWhy then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),

56:87

تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

MeaningDo ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?

56:88

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

MeaningThus if he is of those brought nigh,

56:89

فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ

MeaningThen breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.

56:90

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

MeaningAnd if he is of those on the right hand,

56:91

فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

MeaningThen (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.

56:92

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

MeaningBut if he is of the rejecters, the erring,

56:93

فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ

MeaningThen the welcome will be boiling water

56:94

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ

MeaningAnd roasting at hell-fire.

56:95

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ

MeaningLo! this is certain truth.

56:96

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

MeaningTherefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
