Ahmad bin Umar bin Ali bin Umar Ba Alawi was a scholar of Tarim whose biography in Al-Mashra al-Rawi presents a life combining sacred knowledge, worship and spiritual discipline. The source records that he was born in Tarim, memorised the Qur’an and studied first with his father and other scholars of his generation.

The most prominent teacher named in the account is Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf. Ahmad remained closely attached to him until completing his training. Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that Abd al-Rahman praised him, invested him with the khirqa and granted him authorization within the spiritual path. Ahmad also devoted himself to hadith, fiqh and tasawwuf.

The biography says that many people benefited from him and remembers his regular observance of transmitted litanies and Shadhili devotional practices. It presents these disciplines as part of a life marked by worship, learning and service.

Al-Mashra al-Rawi records that Ahmad died in 842 AH and was buried in Zanbal Cemetery in Tarim.

Lineage and source note

Primary source: Al-Mashra al-Rawi fi Manaqib al-Sada al-Kiram Al Abi Alawi, volume 2, printed page 179. The Arabic heading identifies him as Ahmad bin Umar bin Ali bin Umar bin Ahmad and continues his lineage to al-Faqih al-Muqaddam. The same page supplies his Tarim upbringing, Qur’an memorisation, close training under Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf, work in hadith, fiqh and tasawwuf, death in 842 AH and burial in Zanbal.

Ibn Abi Makhramah’s Qiladat al-Nahr fi Wafayat A’yan al-Dahr, volume 6, page 255, entry 4005, independently identifies the same Ahmad through the lineage Ahmad bin Umar bin Ali bin Umar bin Ahmad bin al-Faqih Muhammad bin Ali Ba Alawi. It also preserves a report that Ahmad received the khirqa from Shaykh Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad Ba Alawi and held authorizations in several khirqa traditions. Qiladat al-Nahr does not supply Ahmad’s death date, so the 842 AH death and Zanbal burial remain attributed here to Al-Mashra al-Rawi.

Scholarly connections

Teacher: Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf. Al-Mashra al-Rawi presents him as Ahmad’s principal teacher and records sustained study and authorization under him. A separate passage in the same work, within the biography of Umar al-Mihdar bin Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf, also names Ahmad among those who took knowledge from Umar al-Mihdar.
